Gajarati Rasio: Vegetarian Indian in London

A friend of mine went on to me for weeks about this amazing Indian food. She would announce when she was going and tell me her woes when they ran out of the dish she wanted. She expressed to me her constant craving for this so-called amazing Indian food from a market in the Hackney area. Fine, right, whatever. I love Indian food also, but could this really be so amazing that it would remain on a woman’s mind to such an obsessive degree?

The simple answer is yes.

I finally met up with her one freezing Saturday in June to go to Broadway Market so she could introduce to me her culinary addiction. I’d never been to Broadway Market before, so I was excited to see something new (I’m a sucker for markets). We walked through the center of the market until we came to the relatively limited space occupied by Gajarati Rasoi. I looked at the menu and decided pretty quickly upon the Samoa Chatt. A man next to us ordered his third samosa and told us for the 5th time how good they were. It was, however, the chickpeas and yoghurt/coriander sauce that drew me in to this dish in which a samosa would be the centrepiece.

Jess eagerly mentioned that was what she always got, so we ordered a couple of those and a dhokra to share.

Heaven, I swear. It was perfection and now I too crave it daily. Go! GO NOW! Or at least go on a Friday or Saturday, when they’re available at markets. Friday and Saturday you can find them at Exmouth Market and on Saturday at Broadway Market.

I took some pictures, but was unfortunately unable to take a photo that wasn’t a blurry non-masterpeice before I devoured half of it (this one is just a non-blurry non-masterpiece):

Visit the Gajarati Rasoi website for more information and descriptions of their food (”It is exactly what we eat at home”)

They are at Broadway Market on Saturdays from 10am-5pm and at Exmouth Market Fridays from 10am-5pm and Saturdays from 10am-3pm. They’re also at Whitecross Street Market on the first Friday and Saturday of the month.
